องค์การอาหารและยาในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาเตือนให้ระวังยาลดความอ้วน 25 ชนิดที่ขายผิดกฎหมายซึ่งมีสารก่อมะเร็งอาทิ sibutramine rimonabant phenytoin และ phenolphthalein โดยเฉพาะสาร sibutramine ซึ่งทำให้เป็นความดันโลหิตสูง เป็นลม ชีพจรเต้นเร็ว หัวใจวาย และเส้นเลือดในสมองแตก และสาร rimonabant ซึ่งทำให้ซึมเศร้าและคิดฆ่าตัวตายจนทำให้มีผู้เสียชีวิตแล้วถึงสองราย

Tainted Diet Pills Could Contain Suspected Carcinogen, FDA Warns

More than 25 different weight-loss products contain unlawful ingredients

Stay away from diet pills; snack with an eye towards a steady blood sugar level.

RODALE NEWS, EMMAUS, PA—The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning customers to steer clear of more than two dozen different weight-loss products, warning that they contain illegal ingredients that could pose major health problems.

THE DETAILS: After investigating companies linked to selling illegal weight-loss pills, the FDA found undeclared active pharmaceutical ingredients in 25 products. The illegal substances include sibutramine (a controlled substance), rimonabant (a drug not cleared for marketing in the United States), phenytoin (an antiseizure medication), and phenolphthalein (a solution used in chemical experiments and a suspected cancer-causing agent). Sibutramine has been linked to high blood pressure, seizures, palpitations, heart attack, and stroke. It could interfere with medications you’re taking, too. Rimonabant is legal in Europe but has been associated with two deaths, increased suicidal thoughts, and depression.

“These tainted weight-loss products pose a great risk to public health because they contain undeclared ingredients and, in some cases, contain prescription drugs in amounts that greatly exceed their maximum recommended dosages,” says Janet Woodcock, MD, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, in the warning issued yesterday.

The agency warns consumers not to buy or take the following products:

The FDA says the companies are not cooperating with recall efforts, and the agency may seek criminal charges.

Here are three strategies to help you fight cravings and achieve a healthy body weight:

• Don’t starve your brain. Avoiding snacks may sap your willpower. A recent study found men with the lowest blood sugar performed the worst on tests that evaluated self-control. When your brain is deprived of its primary fuel (glucose), it becomes harder to stop eating, say the study authors. To control your cravings, keep your blood sugar steady by having a 200-calorie snack every 3 hours or so. The snack should contain 10 grams of protein and a mix of carbs and fat—like a slice of cheese with a pear.

• Sip green tea. A combination of caffeine and 90 mg of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), the potent antioxidant found in green tea, raised metabolism rates, found a 1999 study. Green tea's also packed with beneficial antioxidants. So drink this proven immune-boosting tea for its health benefits and consider the potential calorie-burning spike a bonus.

• Rinse it out. To block craving for sweets, try rinsing your mouth with 30 drops of tincture of the Indian herb gymnema mixed with water.
